The State of Education in Africa

While there are a myriad of issues affecting the education sector our primary focus will always be our teachers. However they face a serious uphill battle.

15m is how many new teachers we need to fill the current deficit. The current student-teacher ratio stands at about 43:1, whereas the optimal ratio would be 10:1 - we don't have enough teachers!

15M

65%

65% of existing teachers have basic teaching qualifications. This means that 35% of teachers on the continent are currently practising without any qualifications

90%

90% of school leaders spend less than 10% of their income on CPD. Despite the fact that Continuous Professional Development has been proven to improve teacher performance.

According to UNESCO research, on average most African teachers are handling a class of 43 students. Meaning that if we can upskill one teacher, we impact the educational experience and future of 43 children.

Through our programmes, we were able to train almost 2000 teachers in the last 2 years. Meaning that, on average, we have impacted the lives of 86,000 students, at a total cost of just under $34,000. This year we'd like to double our impact, but in order to do so, we need your help.

We plan to run 2 cycles of in-person teacher training and 4 virtual cycles. At ISED a single teacher can earn 3 CPD credit units and be transformed for less than $20.

The average African educator earns

<USD1,200 annually with at least 4 dependents.

Without sponsorships, it is often a struggle to afford training. Yet teachers and school leaders need Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to truly empower learners, expand career prospects and find fulfilment in their roles.
